By Lois Lowry
Recommended for Ages 8–12
Sophie’s best friend in the world also has the same name as her. Sophie is 11 years old and her best friend is 88. Sophie has never felt like she has fit in and she found a very unlikely friendship with her elderly neighbor. The two Sophies love to share tea and talk about all their strong opinions. The two find joy and comfort in each other’s company and young Sophie loves to help her friend whenever it is needed.
But over time young Sophie notices changes in her friend’s behavior. Signs of memory loss and confusion. Then young Sophie overhears a conversation that the son of her dear elderly friend has plans to visit and take his mother to the doctor because he also has concerns. This is when young Sophie begins to try everything to help her best friend.
As she begins to help her friend remember things the flood gates open and the stories pour out. Stories of life in Poland before and during World War II. Stories that should be shared and treasured.
If anyone has ever encountered the pain of watching a loved one’s cognitive abilities decline, you will understand the ending of this book and sympathize with all involved. Whether or not this story resonates personally it is a beautiful tale of intergenerational friendship and the significance of sharing our stories. An enjoyable book to read together with the youth in your life.
