A Sorceress Comes to Call
by T. Kingfisher
Adult Fiction
If you’re looking for a dark, twisty, and absolutely gripping take on a classic fairytale, might I suggest A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher? This eerie adventure is inspired by The Brothers Grimm’s Goose Girl, and set in the regency era. If you enjoyed Kingfisher’s other titles like Nettle & Bone or What Moves the Dead, I can’t recommend this enough.
The story follows Cordelia, who’s been trapped under the thumb of her terrifyingly powerful mother, Evangeline, all her life. Their house has no doors (seriously, no doors), and the rules are rigid and unnerving. When a suspicious death forces them to flee to the home of a wealthy squire and his sharp, no-nonsense sister, Hester, things really take off. Hester immediately clocks that something is deeply wrong with Evangeline—and she’s determined to stop whatever horror the sorceress has planned.
It’s got Kingfisher’s signature mix of creeping horror, dry humor, and deep emotional weight. The magic is unsettling, the tension is high, and the characters? Absolutely unforgettable. If you love fairy tale retellings with a sinister bite, check A Sorceress Comes to Call out from your local library!
