The film is a touching coming-of-age story that follows two young Mexican-Americans, Ari and Dante, as they navigate adolescence, friendship, and identity in 1980s El Paso, Texas.  Their bond deepens through shared experiences, including learning to swim, camping trips, reading books, and navigating family secrets and personal growth.  The story explores themes of family, identity, and the complexities of human relationships.  

The story has received significant praise and recognition for its lyrical language, exploration of complex characters, and its portrayal of the Mexican-American experience.
