Before Michal Ramsey Smith was a teacher in the Saginaw Public Schools, she was growing up in her loving, lively Black family in the 1950s. Her new book, The Smell of Lilacs, tells the stories of the joys of cooking with her mother, watching her father regale customers in his barber shop, and so many more moments.
