Library Assistant Substitutes – On-Call

LIBRARY ASSISTANT SUBSTITUTES:  The Public Libraries of Saginaw is seeking Library Assistant Substitutes for on-call positions in its main library and branches.  Duties include answering adult and children’s reference questions; helping patrons to locate materials IN all departments; giving computer assistance including Internet searches, working the circulation desk and other duties as assigned. 

REQUIREMENTS:  Four-year bachelor’s degree required.  Applicable library experience; interest in library services; basic knowledge of library procedures is desirable. Excellent public service skills are required. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office fundamentals. Must be willing to work at all libraries in all public service departments, and be available on a year round basis for daytime, evening, and weekend hours as needed.

Library Assistant – Part-time – 25 hours per week

Wickes Library, Children’s Dept.

 We are looking for an enthusiastic, imaginative, self-motivated, capable individual who relates well with children and who would be able to perform the following duties:

  • children’s reader’s advisory services
  • answering reference questions
  • materials selection
  • planning and organizing children’s programming which includes storytelling, puppet shows, crafts, and other children’s programs
  • providing bibliographic instruction,
  • assisting with displays and bulletin boards
  • other duties as assigned.

Ability to work well with patrons and other staff is required. Physical requirements include, but are not limited to, reaching, stooping, bending, and carrying heavy objects. Must be able to set up tables, chairs and large toys/play equipment for programs.

Minimum requirements include a four year college degree with applicable library experience. Interest and experience in children’s services is a must; knowledge of library procedures, public service, computers and software required. Hours are generally Monday through Thursday noon to six p.m. Salary range: $16.94 – $21.36 hourly in six steps. Benefits include vacation, sick leave, and business hours.

Shelving Page- Part-Time -Hours Varied

Shelving Page: The Public Libraries of Saginaw is accepting applications for the position of shelving page.

Duties and responsibilities: Main duties include shelving books and other materials; keeping bookshelves in order; and other duties as assigned.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities: Minimum educational requirements are: high school diploma/equivalent or currently attending high school. Must be flexible and adaptable. Must possess the ability to work well with staff and patrons. Good verbal communication skills are important. Must be able to stoop, bend, reach, and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be available to work days, evenings, and weekends.

Technology Page – Part-time – Hours Varied

TECHNOLOGY PAGE: The Public Libraries of Saginaw is accepting applications for technology pages to provide patrons with basic computer assistance and to provide routine printer and PC maintenance under supervision.

Duties and responsibilities: Assisting patrons with computer basics including such processes as setting margins, double spacing, pagination, etc.; instructing patrons on basic use of online databases; assisting patrons with Internet searches; providing routine maintenance for printers and other hardware including cleaning computers and printers, stocking printers, copy machines, and microfilm reader/printers with paper, replacing cartridges and ribbons, assisting patrons with printer problems; and other duties as assigned.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:   Computer knowledge including skill in Windows 7, Windows XP and Vista operating systems, Microsoft Office 2007 applications including Outlook Email, and extensive Internet experience. Mechanical and mathematical aptitude required. Familiarity with inkjet, laser and bubble jet printers. The ability to work well with staff and patrons and good verbal communication skills are essential. Must be available to work days, evenings and weekends.

Minimum education and experience: Computer experience required. Minimum high school graduate/equivalent or current high school student.
