505 Thompson
RESIDENCE
Site 17
(Constructed for Mr. & Mrs. Julius Liebermann)
Completed 1919
Architect: J. Fred Beckbissinger, Saginaw, Michigan
This Arts and Crafts-style home is designed to take advantage of the lot’s generous frontage on Thompson Street. The main entrance to the house is on this side street. The door to the attached garage is prominently positioned facing South Jefferson Avenue - a feature not universally admired by all neighbors. To create additional outdoor living space, the architect created a terrace on the flat roof of the garage.
Masonry walls and reinforced concrete floors help make the house fire-resistant and reflect a concern of Julius Liebermann, for whom it was designed. Before opening a luggage store in Saginaw, he had been a traveling salesman and had witnessed devastating hotel fires. J. Fred Beckbissinger was the architect for Liebermann’s store that stood on East Genesee.
