505 MILLARD
JEFFERSON APARTMENTS
Site 13
Designed 1922, Constructed 1926
Architect: Carl Macomber, Saginaw, Michigan
Located two blocks beyond the edge of the business district, the Jefferson Apartments were developed by the Saginaw Business and Professional Women’s Association. Chartered in 1918 to “promote the interest of vocational women .... and to aid in every way possible any movement for the betterment of the community,” the organization purchased the site for the apartments in 1920. They promoted the construction of the apartments as “an aid to the housing problem in Saginaw and as a home for young business women.” About 70 percent of the investors in the project were women. However, occupancy in the building was not limited to women.
With the main entrance facing Millard Street, the four story building is “U” shaped with a central light well. Simple exterior walls are ornamented with classically inspired details. Originally, the building had a cornice. The building contains 41 apartments.
