Public Libraries of Saginaw Partner with Saginaw County Animal Care Center… to Promote and Increase Shelter Animal Adoption
In 2011 the Saginaw County Animal Care Center took in over 4,600 animals; 31% were placed through adoption or reclaimed by their owners. Kevin Wilken, new Director of the Center is driven and motivated by his goal to implement changes that will ultimately increase adoption and placement rates for his Center. In November, a Saginaw News Mlive article reported that Wilken “was looking forward to providing new ideas to streamline operations, improve adoption rates and minimize euthanasia.” Wilken further stated, “There is a lot that needs to be done.” We are going to need the community’s help. It’s going to take the work and effort of a lot of people.”
In that spirit, the Public Libraries of Saginaw liked what it read and approached Wilken with the idea of forming a partnership to assist the Center by utilizing a variety of library resources such as programming, library website, monthly print and eNewsletter, and special events… to promote shelter animal adoption…with the ultimate outcome to find loving homes for shelter animals and thereby reduce euthanasia. Trish Burns, Director of the Public Libraries of Saginaw, stated, “Partnering with other local organizations strengthens the quality of programs offered by both entities. Many families include their pets as a valued part of their lives and partnering with the Saginaw County Animal Care Center will provide wider recognition of their great work in the community, as well as offering some exciting and fun new opportunities for programs in the libraries.“
The library is also planning special library programming which will involve local experts, who will share and inform the community about proper animal care and feeding, selecting the “right” animal for your family, and library resources which will assist and inform current and future pet owners.
