Ape There are five kinds of great apes in the world: orangutan, chimp, bonobo, gorilla, and YOU! This book simply explains a little about each of these groups of animals, yes including humans. Best of all are the lifelike illustrations, which really seem to accurately depict the humanistic qualities of these great animals. The Beetle Alphabet Book Brilliantly colored illustrations are top-notch in this book. Jerry Pallotta found an insect to go with each letter of the alphabet – even X! Study up on beetles as we prepare to “Catch the Reading Bug” with this year’s summer reading program. Favorite Nursery Rhymes from Mother Goose Every child should have a book with Mother Goose rhymes. This one would definitely fit the bill. Each rhyme has its own two-page spread, toting large, highly-readable print and very attractive artwork. Definitely a book that would easily become a favorite for any child. How Big Is It?: A Big Book All About Bigness When we’re talking about the size of objects, it’s often hard to imagine just how big things are without comparing them to something else. Here’s a book that does that. If you’d like to know just how big a Goliath Bird-eating Spider is, just turn to page 14 where it’s sitting on a 12 inch dinner plate! That’s not something I would want to eat tonight! Where in the Wild?: Camouflaged Creatures Concealed…and Revealed Animals use camouflage for various reasons – to hide from the hunter and the hunted alike. Don’t be fooled! These animals are hiding on every page and revealed when you lift the flap. Readers will also enjoy a poem and more detailed information on each animal featured in the book. Why War Is Never a Good Idea In this tumultuous time in our world, Alice Walker has written a wonderful book about the destructiveness of war. Her simple writing style will help children to understand the awesome and awful power that war has over people and the places where they live. Women Daredevils One hundred years ago women did not have the opportunities that they have today. It was appropriate for women to be taking care of children and the house, not parachuting from airplanes or being shot out of a cannon! Read 10 stories of various courageous women of their time in this unique book.
