Fiction (Updated! May 2009)

Magic Pickle: The Full-Color Graphic Novel
Morse, Scott

Follow the crime fighting adventures of superhero Magic Pickle and his sidekick Jo Jo Wegman as they match wits with the Brotherhood of Evil Produce, vegetables rotten to the core, and the school bully Lulu. Of course, the final showdown has to be a food fight in the school cafeteria. This comic book-style novel is the first in a series.

Chains
Anderson, Laurie Halse

Set in the time of the American Revolution, this is the fast-paced story of thirteen-year-old Isabel, a slave with the mission of becoming free. Follow her to New York, where she was wrongfully sold after the death of her owner in Rhode Island. This 2009 winner of the Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction captures the emotion and reality of slavery at the time. I particularly loved the primary source excerpts at the beginning of each chapter.

Our White House: Looking Out, Looking In
Various Authors

This creative anthology looks at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and offers a dynamic view of the people who built it, lived in it, and have been touched by it in some way. Over 100 authors and illustrators contributed essays, short stories, reflections, and glorious illustrations to this handsome volume. Through their work, readers will gain a new appreciation for “the people’s house.” As author Sarah Stewart writes in her essay Visiting the White House, “We are all Americans and the White House belongs to all of us.”
