The Great Michigan READ Hemingway Writing ContestMichigan READS logo

PROMPT #1:

Ernest Hemingway mastered the craft of writing about his environment.  Whether he was in Michigan, Paris, Cuba, or Spain, he found inspiration in his surroundings.  Consider the impact of your surroundings here in mid-Michigan.  How does the geography and culture of your area affect your life?

OR

PROMPT #2:

Nick Adams’ relationship with his family and friends is a puzzle.  At first Nick appears well-adjusted in a “normal” family.  A closer look reveals otherwise.  Readers have attempted to decipher Nick’s relationship with his family, friends, and lovers.  As with all of us, Nick’s relationships play an essential role in shaping the man he becomes.  How do your relationships influence your life as you journey toward adulthood?
